How To Make Skin Textures
Friday, January 30th, 2009I had planned to do a photoshop tutorial explaining this, however I used ZBrush for it’s ability to capture a movie. I was surprised to find that ZBrush was for better for making skin textures!
Really this is a proof of concept, and can be used with any software if it can use alphas OR make a selection from a B/W image.
There are no hard and fast rules, it is just trying to get a sense of depth and a variation in natural skin tones.
What follows is a stop frame animation using 3 alphas I created and 1 that ships with ZB (but not really necessary). By rotating, inverting and flipping the alphas you end up with some good variation from just 3 files.
A limited palette of colours was used with varying opacities; first reddish browns, then dark blues, light blues, more reddish colours and finally some creamy whites and yellows. These can be changed depending on what you are creating, from green aliens to grey elephants.
Here is the final image:
And here are the 3 alphas that I created and used:

Free Skin Textures
Thursday, January 29th, 2009Here are some of the skin textures created by me that I use for my monsters.
The ones that I made and use are 4K images but I have reduced everything to 700×700 to save my bandwidth.
I use them in ZBrush to spray on colour and I hope to add some tutorials soon detailing how I made the textures and how I texture models using the paint tools in ZBrush. In the mean time enjoy:
